I agree with most of the sentiments that have been expressed already here. The Eclipse Awards have been a joke for quite some time now. I guess I could go back to Favorite Trick being chosen Horse of the Year over the great Skip Away in '97. There has never been any specific criteria defined which obviously open the door for the voter's personal biases to seep into the process.
If they wanna put it in the hands of fans and turn it into a popularity contest as was the case with Zenyatta/Blame in 2010, then so be it but that only serves to cheapen the process even further. I don't know exactly what the solution is but I do think there needs to more clearly defined terms as to what makes sufficient case for which award.
I've always felt that G1 races should carry more weight when it comes to the major awards (HOTY, Older Male, 3YO etc) while also taking into consideration that all G1s are never created equal. Quality of competition has to be a factor as well. For example, G1 races in open company should outweigh G1s races restricted by age, gender etc with TC races as the obvious exception and less emphasis on the BC.
Also, turf horses deserve more respect when it comes to major awards. Prime example of this being back in 2011 when Cape Blanco was passed over in the Older Male category in favor of Acclamation whom he had alreafy bested in the Turf Male division. These are types of glaring inconsistencies which upset the integrity of the entire process.
Long story short, remedies are required.
Just sayin...
