Three Pennsylvania-based Thoroughbred trainers and a clocker employed by Hollywood Casino at Penn National in Grantville, Pa., pleaded not guilty in federal court Friday to charges they defrauded the public and were released, pending a January trial.
Trainers David Wells, Sam Webb, and Patricia Rogers were charged with attempting to commit wire fraud and use of an interstate facility to promote gambling in violation of the law for allegedly treating their horses illegally with drugs prior to races that were to be broadcast across state lines. Danny Robertson was charged with wire fraud and use of an interstate facility to promote gambling in violation of the law for allegedly accepting cash to provide false workout times to Equibase, North America’s official horse racing database. Rogers was also accused of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
All four were arrested Friday morning at Penn National as part of an ongoing state and federal investigation that involved the FBI, Pennsylvania State Police, Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission, and a federal grand jury. Their licenses have been suspended indefinitely by the Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission, pending the outcome of the criminal cases.
While unlikely to see such extreme penalties, each of the accused faces up to 25 years of imprisonment and fines of $500,000. Rogers faces an additional potential 20-year term and $250,000 fine on the conspiracy charge.
OK SO, LETS REFLECT ON THE SITUATION 1, ALL THREE ARE CURRENTLY FREE, MADE IT HOME IN TIME FOR DINNER 2, NONE OF THE PEOPLE INDICTED HAVE BEEN BANNED FROM PENN NAT. THIS IS EXACTLY WHY PEOPLE LIKE PAULICK SHOULD HAVE HELD OFF WITH REPORTING THIS STUFF, SURE IT SOUNDS SEXY AND IT CREATES VIEWS BUT IN THE LONG RUN ITS MOSTLY A RUSH TO REPORT NOTHING.

Most defendants are released on bail pending trail. If their licenses have been suspended how are they going to get to the backside?. I think it stands to reason they won't be let on the grounds.

Management might let them into the casino to play the game reminiscent of what they said when the FBI showed up: CRAP

paulick is famous for reporting nothing............ just ask bob baffert. The CHRB investigation wasn't "nothing". It still bothers me that that drug was being used for every horse. RG has promised to do some research on the drug.

Friendly suggestion: why not ask how Baffert came up in this topic? He was mentioned before the CHRB.

because anywhere where paulick goes, baffert is probably already there..............with rays head embedded in his ass!!
I don't understand what research needs to be done? whether or not you think the drug was necessary on every horse, the facts are it wasn't illegal. and once bob realized that's what might have been causing the deaths, he stopped using it. he hasn't denied using it. and wasn't forced to stop. he did so on his volition.

wonder if any of the pa trainers used same drug?
technically you're right wiz - baffert didn't break rules - however - there's no way every horse in anyone's barn needs the drug - so maybe the chrb rules are wrong - maybe it should be illegal on race days or within a certain time frame? does tell me baffert will use anything to gain an edge because $, not horse's health, is his goal - some agree with that - i don't - good old fashioned training is preferable to pumping horses with the latest "aid" imo
think learning more about the drug would be good
does anyone know if other states have rules for this drug? more proof racing needs a national board
