Would you bet it on Wise Dan or go for the gold? LOL
A visit to Saratoga to view America’s best Thoroughbred racing is a highly- anticipated event for racing fans, but it could take on a real fantasy this year in celebration of the 150th year since racing began in the spa city. Five fans will get to direct a $15,000 Win wager of a designated stakes race, with someone else’s money. Should the fan choose the winning horse, they will get to take home the full on-track winnings, not having spent a penny of their own cash.
On August 3, 2013, the date of the first race at Saratoga 150 years ago, Sesquicentennial Honorary Chairs Marylou Whitney and John Hendrickson will present the first-prize contest winner with his or her choice of which horse to direct the $15,000 Win wager on, in the $750,000 Whitney Handicap for three-year-olds and up. The long- time racing principals and civic-minded couple are underwriting the $75,000 Saratoga 150 promotion that offers five lucky fans this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The $15,000 Win wager-choice promotion will be offered each Saturday, thereafter, throughout the remainder of the Saratoga racing meeting that runs through Labor Day. The other designated races are: August 10, the $500,000 Fourstardave Handicap; August 17, the $600,000 Alabama Stakes; August 24, the $1 million Travers Stakes; and August 31, the $750,000 Woodward Stakes.

Bet it on the longest shot, take a mini cross bow and load the arrow head with the strongest, fast acting amphetamine I could get my hands on and shoot the sucker in the rump as they approach the back stretch, collect my $$$ and go to Hawaii for a few weeks.

Doesn't the fan have to bet the full 15K? If not, just pocket it and say TY and Bye!
Some Fourstar hedging advice for the $15K winner By Steven Crist DRF
In his day job, Adam McNeill of Saratoga Springs dispenses investment advice as a financial planner with a local firm. On Saturday at Saratoga Race Course, where he won a drawing to make a free $15,000 win bet on the Fourstardave Handicap, he may want to consider some investment advice from more seasoned horseplayers: Hedge your bet.
Personally, I think that if you win $15,000 in free wagers, you should be able to bet it however you want – put it all to show on Wise Dan at a likely $2.10 for $2 and walk away with $15,750, or play it even safer and bet the entire field to win in varying amounts so that you would lose the 16 percent win takeout but go home with $12,600 no matter how the race turns out. However, under the rules of the ongoing contest – a different random patron gets chosen on each of five Saturdays as part of the Saratoga 150 anniversary celebration – one must bet the entire enchilada on one horse to win.
Last week’s winner had to select one horse and only one horse in the Whitney. He spent the week agonizing whether to go with Fort Larned or Cross Traffic, and this being the racetrack you know how that story turned out, whether or not you saw the race. The moment of truth came and he went with Fort Larned, who ran fifth as the 6-5 favorite while Cross Traffic won and paid $9.10. What would have been so terrible about letting him bet $10,000 on Fort Larned and $5,000 on Cross Traffic so he could have walked away with $22,750 instead of nothing but indigestion from second-guessing himself?
So McNeill must bet one horse to win in the Fourstardave and he would be crazy not to bet it on Wise Dan, not only because he is by far the most likely winner but also because putting the big free bet on the heavy favorite will allow him to hedge. This may not seem to be in the spirit of the thing, but there is no reason for him to go home empty-handed, or with nothing but a baseball cap and a sad story, if the reigning Horse of the Year is upset.
Here’s what he could do to guarantee keeping some of that free money: Bet the free $15,000 on Wise Dan, which will get him back $24,000 if he wins and pays $3.20, $22,500 if he wins and pays $3.00, or $21,000 if he wins and pays $2.80. Then he could take something like $8,000 of personal funds – I’m sure his firm could lend it to him if he doesn’t have it on hand, since this is a foolproof investment – and bet Wise Dan’s six opponents in varying amounts to get at least $15,000 if any one of them wins.
It would work something like this: Bet $2,200 on King Kreesa and Lea at 6-1 each to get back a minimum of $15,400 (he would get more if 6-1 turns out to be $15.80 instead of $14); bet $1,700 to win on Za Approval at 8-1 to get back at least $15,300; $1,400 on Mr. Commons at 10-1 for at least $15,400; $1,000 on Skyring at 15-1 ($16,000), and $500 on Willyconker at 30-1 ($15,500).
That’s a personal investment of $8,000 and yes, that means he’d “profit” on the $15,000 “stake” by only $7,000 to $9,000 if there’s an upset, and walk away “only” $16,000 to the good, instead of $24,000, if Wise Dan wins at 3-5. But isn’t that better than going home with nothing but a free lunch, a Saratoga baseball cap, and a sad story if Wise Dan loses?
Campaign advice As for all the debate about whether Wise Dan should be running in Grade 2 turf miles such as the Firecracker and Fourstardave instead of the Whitney or the Woodward and eventually the Breeders’ Cup Classic, I think some fans and the gelding’s defensive owner, Morton Fink, are missing the point. Fink is not obligated to run Wise Dan in the country’s best and most important races, and if he wants to try to keep winning the same turf miles every year, that’s entirely his prerogative.
What he can’t do is assume that redundant campaigns entitle Wise Dan to retain his Horse of the Year title year after year, because that ignores the fact that Wise Dan got the award somewhat by default last year, and I say that having voted for him. Had Game On Dude won the Classic or had Point of Entry won the Turf, either would have been more deserving.
This is no knock at all on Wise Dan, a very good racehorse, but by staying within a narrow band and running only on America’s secondary surface, his accomplishments in turf miles will by definition not match up with those of classic-distance horses at year’s end unless there is chaos among the best 10-furlong dirt horses and turf routers

FIRST OFF, IM NOT SO SURE THIS GUY HAS THE BET RULES RIGHT. MOST PLACES THAT GIVE YOU FREE BETS OF THIS KIND ONLY GIVE YOU THE WINNINGS FROM YOUR WAGER, NOT THE ORIGINAL STAKE. IM NOT SURE WHAT THE RULES ARE ON THIS BUT I WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED IF THAT IS HOW IT WORKS. IF SO, IF HE BET 15K ON WISE DAN AT 2-5 HE WOULD ONLY WIN 6K, NOT 21K. SECOND OF ALL, TO RG............. IN RESPONSE TO YOUR QUESTION SOMEWHERE ELSE ABOUT SKYRING............ I AM NOT HATING ON HIM BECAUSE OF LUKAS AS I SAID 2 RACES BACK I THOUGHT HE HAD A LEGITIMATE CHANCE. BUT HE HAS NO SHOT IN THIS RACE. ALTHOUGH HE HAS RATED OCCASSIONALLY IN THE PAST, HIS BEST RACES HAVE COME WHEN HE HAS MADE THE LEAD AND CONTROLLED A LEISURELY PACE. THERE IS NO CHANCE OF THAT HAPPENING SATURDAY WITH KING KREESA AND EVEN LEA IN THE RACE. ALSO IF HE WAS LIVE IM SURE STEVENS WOULD HAVESCHEDULED HIS TRIP OVERSEAS DIFFERENTLY IN ORDER TO BE HERE TO RIDE IN A 500K RACE AND KEEP THE MOUNT ON A POSSIBLE BREEDERS CUP TURF CONTENDER. HE WILL NEVER SEE THE LEAD SATURDAY AND WILL BE LUCKY TO BEAT BIILYBONKER.

CONTEST BET:
Saratoga 150 provides the winners with the opportunity to direct a fifteen thousand dollar ($15,000.00) legal “Win†wager on one horse participating in a Saturday feature race at Saratoga Race Course in 2013.
The winner has not won fifteen thousand dollars ($15,000.00), but has simply won the right to direct one free wager in the amount of fifteen thousand dollars ($15,000.00) which a designated representative of Saratoga 150 will place on the horse selected by the winner.
The free wager itself has no cash value to the winner and cannot be transferred or redeemed for cash by Winner.
Winner will win the proceeds, if any, of the free wager he/she directed; to be redeemed as follows: if the wager placed by the Saratoga 150 representative results in a “winning†pari-mutual ticket as determined solely by the outcome of the race, the Saratoga 150 representative will deliver possession of the winning ticket to the winner which winner will immediately take to the designated IRS window at the track for cashing and required IRS documentation.
All risk of loss of the winning ticket (if any) shall pass to winner at the time the winner receives possession of the ticket.
In the event the ticket is lost, stolen, destroyed or otherwise not presented for payment in accordance with all track policy and procedures, it will not be replaced and winner will not receive any proceeds/payment for the wager. Prize may vary, depending on the outcome/proceeds from the wager.
Winner agrees to be accompanied by race track security and the Saratoga 150 representative from initial receipt of the ticket until it may be turned in at the IRS window.

Why? It's still extra money for the lucky fan! They should get some sort of consolation though. Maybe a season guest pass?

I DONT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THEM TAXING THE 15K. BUT NO WAY IN HELL SHOULD THE WINNINGS ON THE BET BE TAXED ON A 2-5 SHOT. ANY OTHER BET AND THEY DONT TAX ANYTHING UNDER 300-1 ODDS, MINIMUM 600 DOLLARS. ITS RIDICULOUS.

Saratoga 150 contest winner takes home $22,500 after Alabama Stakes bet By PAUL POST The Saratogian SARATOGA SPRINGS — Sometimes it doesn’t hurt to take a risk, but Deborah White proved Saturday how playing it safe can pay huge dividends. The Gansevoort woman bet $15,000 on favorite Princess of Sylmar in the Alabama Stakes and watched the 3-year-old filly reward her with a $22,500 payoff. White, 50, who sells fragrance at Bon-Ton in Wilton Mall, said she plans to bankroll her winnings, with the exception of one thing. “I’m going to buy a new phone,” she said, smiling. “I have an $8 TracFone that doesn’t work too well. They had a hard time getting a hold of me to let me know I’d won the contest.” White was the third in a series of five lucky fans who will get to bet $15,000, donated by Marylou Whitney and John Hendrickson, on a featured Saturday race during this year’s 150th anniversary Saratoga season. “I’m so happy for her, she’s a hard-working girl,” said Whitney, who held White’s hand as they watched the race together from the track’s winners circle. “I told her she should put it in the bank and save it.” White is the second person to claim victory in the promotion. Last week, Adam McNeill of Saratoga Springs won $21,000 in the Fourstardave. There are two races left — next Saturday’s Grade 1, $1 million Travers Stakes and the $750,000 Woodward Stakes Aug. 31. Fans may enter for a chance to win the $15,000 wagering money by going to www.saratoga150.comUsually, White only goes to the track a couple of times a year. After Saturday’s success, she might start visiting more frequently. Continued... 123See Full Story “I’ve learned more about racing during the past week than I ever knew before,” she said. “It’s a fluke that I even entered.” “Don’t get addicted,” Hendrickson joked. White spent the day with her niece watching from clubhouse box seats provided by New York Racing Association, which also treated them to lunch in the Turf Terrace dining room. Normally, Bon-Ton is quite busy on Saturdays during the racing season, so White had to make sure she could get the day off after learning she’d won the contest to bet $15,000. People must be present at the track to make the wager. This probably explains why 70 percent of the 15,000 entrants are residents of the 518 area code region. “We didn’t offer our plane,” Hendrickson said. Will the contest be held next year? “If you can find an underwriter, I can guarantee you it’ll be an annual thing,” he said. While White was the day’s biggest winner, Princess of Sylmar’s victory brought smiles to quite a few other people’s faces, too. It was trainer Todd Pletcher’s first win in the prestigious race, which was run for the 133rd time, and jockey Javier Castellano wore a wide grin, too. Before the race, three teenage Saratoga 150 ambassadors — Marlaina Murphy, Caitlin Schult and Sydney Doris — presented White with her $15,000 to bet with. All three girls wore full-length white Victorian dresses from Whitney’s collection, which she’s giving the girls as a keepsake from Saratoga’s sesquicentennial celebration. “They’re ecstatic, they can’t express their gratitude,” said Robin Litfin, a Saratoga 150 volunteer. Obviously, White is quite pleased with her good fortune, too. “I am absolutely thrilled,” she said.

My problem with Uncle Sam taking his cut is that cheap skate never volunteers to go in on the bet with me but wants his cut after I win. I do all the handicapping and research and he benefits. I think that ALL gambling winnings should be free from all taxes.
