Damn! That's about the only time I get the chance to tour all the farms is when I go to the BC in Kentucky. Not that I am complaining about the possibility of spending those Novembers days in warmer climates as it is CHILLY here in November but I liked traveling to different tracks for the BC and especially when it was at CHurchill because of the extra blissful days of visiting the horse farms. *Sigh*

My guess is it will become permanenetly located at Santa Anita OR it will alternate between SA and Belmont Park. I heard ALOT of buzz at the pre-BC party last year where MANY connections were talking about it heading other places and the truth is simply this...cold weather doesnt' prompt people to plan horse racing vacations...it just doesn't. I know the guys that meet up with us every year at the BC are from England and they will be the first to tell you it is "bloody cold" that time of year so they look forward to a few short days at the BC where they can relax in sunny weather and shorts. I have to say I agree. Also, the prices are cheaper when it is held at SA than it is anywhere else. I couldn't believe how expensive my trip was when it was at Churchill...the hotels skyrockey because they know the BC is in town and inflate their prices. In SoCal, they simply don't care because there are a gazillion hotels nearby and they don't need to plump the prices. Not to mention cruising up 101 with the top down and the sunshine streaming off the ocean is pure bliss as opposed to rainy, snowy, windy and COLD weather pretty much every where else. We get enough of that here all year round so sunshine is more than fine with me.

How will the turf course hold up at SA? Since the dump in Inglewood is getting plowed, isn't SA committed to more dates in the fall?

Chall, what do slots have to do with it? Lone Star got it and it was a complete nightmare. Arlington has the best lawn in the country and its not even close. Weather can be put into question but its no different than Belmont.

mack I think he meant goodbye Arlington altogether, not just their chances of getting the bc. without slots, all tracks are on the verge of closure somewhere down the line.

the bc gets worse every year - leave it in cali - then eastern based outfits could boycott and bring back the great fall racing -
stronach could suggest laurel except he really isn't going to help md racing because he didn't screw the horsemen here as much as he wanted to lol
laurel has a magnificent turf course - the dc international should leave the bc and come back where it belongs! 3 airports, 2 cities, tons of hotels, restaurants, easier for the euros etc. -
maybe when stronach tears down historic pimlico, builds a mini grandstand and opens an upscale mall in a very downscale area, he'll try for a bc - he likes tents and folding chairs i guess!
and.......for the bc guys - cali fits -it's a very drug friendly state!

The BC, besides dope is THE biggest reason for the fall of the sport. Rid the event which is nothing more than farce. I don't care where it is held. DUMP IT COMPLETELY!

I've been saying for some time now that the BC needs to be done away with alltogether. It is beyond irrelevant at this point and has played a major role in the overall decline of the sport. Way too much emphasis placed on this farce. It was a great concept when it first started out, but just like everything else, money has corrupted it. It is now a glorified circus act.
ABOLISH IT NOW!!!!

cait I don't know anyone in cali who iuses drugs!!  too bad - some could really use them re the BC - take it to the fair circuit - safer than the pos track surface at delmar (beautiful venue but terrible track) - it would be devastating to see BC b/d's - altho' with the falling viewership might not be all that harmful to racing's image - the idiots running the BC should be ashamed of themselves for taking an excellent concept and trashing it completely - no wonder so many are resigning from the board keeping it in cali might help that pathetic circuit but it will then truly become a cali championship day - those greedy idiots won't voluntarily get rid of it - that's why it should be boycotted by the better stables and the euros - there's plenty of $ to be found elsewhere these days |

cait while I agree with your cocept and thinking, you know that will never happen. when your rich like you are (ive seen your bank statements!) its easy to tell others to boycott shots at big money. the fact is enough is never enough and that will never happen.
and the only reason that "pathetic" circuit is what it is is because of the states failure to allow slots, therefore minimizing the purses. you can say whatever you want to about the drugs and trainers out here, but if they allowed slots, withing 2 years cal. would have the best racing in the country again, just like we did in the 80's and 90's.

I do however, wholeheartedly agree that the bc should not be kept in one spot. that is not what it was created for. it should never be at the same track more then once every 4 or 5 years.

wiz - I agree that politics have too much say about horseracing. One of the reasons CA racing has declined is there is a lot of $ to be made on the East Coast which has many tracks easily accessible. There's no need to travelacross the country.
I can't see the BC at DelMar. The turf course is bad, the main track worse. If something isn't done about the increasing breakdown and injury rate at Delmar, I can't see racing there at all! The truth is Delmar doesn't get good entries on a daily basis. I hate that Hollywood could not be saved. So that leaves Santa Anita. I truly do wish CA racing could return to it's former glory days but for now, it's just not there.
The BC's turn around on Lasix was heartily endorsed by CA based trainers. I do remember looking up some drug information and I remember CA had shorter times when drugs could be used before races.
As Cait once posted, the BC is a for profit corporation. So as it makes money for the corporation it will probably stick around. The money conditions it requires of host tracks really limit a track's willingness to host. That's hardly what was intended when it was created. If it leaves CA, it will probably wind up at Gulfstream because of Stronach. But he's going to have to spring for a lot of temporary seating. His mini grandstand may accomodate the entrie's connections and media - not many others LOL
I don't think it helps racing at all. It estableished a non-profit because it's a good tax write off and hopefully makes the BC appearto be what it was meant to be. But - it is not.

say what you will about santa anita, but at least they had enough common sense to know when they had made a mistake ( a forced one at that) and went back to dirt. the synthetic tracks are more dangerous then the dirt ones, and should have never been used to begin with.
ev, ca. is no farther west then it was 30 years ago. if the money for the purses are here, the top jocks and trainers will be too, along with the top barns and horses. if the money is right for them, most would rather spend their days in warm weather at the beach then they would sitting in a snowstorm. as far as Lasix goes, I think all of us agree it needs to go, and if the ca. horsemen cant deal with that then they can go to. if its illegal everywhere, they wont leave. why would they?

wiz - I've just been updating our calendar. There's little money in CA compared to Saratoga and other Eastern tracks. G1's for 300K? That's 1/2or less of Saratoga's. G2's for 150K? There are a lot of Eastern non graded races for 100K and more so why travel?
The grading system should have minimums for graded races. If tracks can't put up the money, they shouldn't get the grades because the best horses won't show up for cheap purses when they can get black type much closer to home. That's why so many "Big" Ca races have such small fields, Even if it's because of no slots and politics, a G1 with a field of 5 (with 1 trainer having entered 2 or 3 to ensure the race goes) is ridiculous and a truly el cheapo graded win. It should not happen.
