From DRF: Aqueduct cancels Sunday card www.drf.com/news/aqueduct-cancels-sunday-card-due-high-windsAqueduct cancels Sunday card due to high windsSunday’s nine-race card at Aqueduct was canceled due to high winds, according to track officials. Both Aqueduct and Belmont Park were to remain open for simulcasting. According to Glen Kozak, NYRA’s vice president/facilities and racing surfaces, the National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for sustained winds from 20 to 30 miles per hour, with gusts ranging from 45 to 55 mph, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Kozak said the cancellation did not have to do with temperatures that were in the low 20s Sunday morning. “Temperatures aren’t the issue,” he said. “The track is fine; the turf had a little crust on it. It’s the wind that’s the issue.” Live racing is scheduled to resume Wednesday.

It seems that these days, especially at tracks with casinos, it doesn't take much to cancel.
Intuition tells me that Parx wanted to cancel due to a low number of entries - only 8 races and 59 betting interests before scratches. Bet they wanted to "save" the horses for a later date. The weather isn't all that bad down there.
Aqueduct is another story - the winds off Jamaica Bay (and Atlantic Ocean) can be treacherous - even if the wind speed in NYC itself isn't high.
Glad I'm not on a flight landing at JFK today!

Chester (Philadelphia) harness is open today - only 25 miles from Parx, which is further inland.

I find it quite ironic that PARX probably closed because they wanted to "save" the Horses But the winds over the bay makes it OK to cancel. The Jocks in NY are just too "soft"

Google "wind Jamaica Bay" - have you ever been in that area on a day when the winds are measured at ~ 25 MPH?
From the National Weather Service:
Wind Advisory for Southern Queens, NY
until 6 pm EST, Sun., Nov. 24, 2013
Issued by The National Weather Service New York City, NY 9:41 am EST, Sun., Nov. 24, 2013
... WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM EST THIS EVENING...
* LOCATIONS... LOWER HUDSON VALLEY... NEW YORK CITY... LONG ISLAND... NORTHEAST NEW JERSEY... AND SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT.
* HAZARDS... STRONG WINDS.
* WINDS... NORTHWEST 15 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS AROUND 45 MPH.
* TIMING... STRONGEST WINDS WILL OCCUR FROM LATE MORNING THROUGH LATE AFTERNOON.
* IMPACTS... DOWNED TREE LIMBS AND ISOLATED POWER OUTAGES.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A WIND ADVISORY IS ISSUED WHEN SUSTAINED WINDS OF 31 TO 39 MPH... OR GUSTS OF 46 TO 57 MPH... ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. WINDS THIS STRONG CAN MAKE DRIVING DIFFICULT... ESPECIALLY FOR HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES. USE EXTRA CAUTION.
No such advisory for Bensalem, PA.
Always needling, aren't you?

Been there done that. The old time jocks would have ridden. As a former NY leading trainer told me last year todays jocks are whimps So Alan both tracks suffered from the same disease whimp jocks. If I'm not mistaken harness tracks have a lot of solid fence cover which serves to block a lot of the wind.

George:
Evelyn & Jon keep telling everyone at Paddock Pros is aloud to voice his/her opinions. I voiced mine yet YOU chose to put a little rude comment in also " always needling, aren't you?" WHY???

Why? Your "opinion" of jockeys in NY where the winds were gusting up into the 50s is that they're "soft", yet not a peep about the jockeys at Parx where the winds were only in the low 20s.
Aside from that, none of the news reports about the cancellations say nothing about jockeys.
Both were closed due to management decisions.
You always seem to find something negative to say about my posts, even a few the other day when I was AGREEING with you!

Back to the topic - Racing has had a rough 72 hours. With safety being such an issue, I have no problem with the cancellations. Heaven forbid something happened and caused injuries. I don't think PARX cancelled because of the number of entries. I don't think any jock is a "wimp". They have extremely risky jobs.
Can we please stop the personal "jabs"?

Lt1 didn't single out just the NY jockeys, he said both tracks had wimp jockeys.
But in both cases it doesn't appear to have been the jockeys that caused the cancellation - there was no mention of jockeys the news reports for the cancellations.

That's because in the new PC era no one is blamed so they call it management decision. And to clarify the trainer statement it didn't refer to their race riding but only the way they won't ride when the weather isn't great. As he pointed out AQU only cancelled when the roads to the track weren't passable.

George:
For the record, before Management does cancel the races they DO talk things over with the Jockeys. If you choose to verify my statement please do call 1-718-641-4700 and ask for the Racing Office.
